After an extensive audit & review process, XLVets Ireland are proud to be awarded an EcoMerit Company Certificate, a commitment to optimise the use of our resources, notably energy, carbon, waste and water and committing to a 5 year plan of agreed actions to ensure we are more sustainable in how we work.

Next step in this project, in conjunction with EcoMerit and XLVets Skillnet, has been to commission Phase 1 of a research project to better understand what sustainability means in veterinary, in Ireland, being completed in 2022. This phase will complete an in-depth analysis of a set of veterinary businesses, to identify those common denominators that we can then investigate further in a larger set of businesses, leading to a publishable report on best practice approaches.

Central to the EcoMerit approach is its practical, straightforward, yet rigorous Environmental Certification. Certified members of the community benefit from ongoing environmental support who apply a tried and tested programme of resource efficiency, with defendable results in reducing emissions.

On average, EcoMerit members have achieved:

–         9% year-on-year reductions in carbon emissions.

–         Typical annual carbon savings of some 70 tonnes per member.

That’s an emissions reduction of 60% over a 10-year period. Compare this with the EU target of 55% over 40 years (1990-2030). EcoMerit members are setting a leading example to the business community of what is possible for climate change mitigation in business.

XLVets Ireland is a network of independently owned veterinary practices. Our membership model is built by members, for members. Our success is from smart, focused, value driving works, closely collaborating and delivering strong commercial benefits, sound organisational processes and support to members.

XLVets Skillnet is co-funded by Skillnet Ireland and our member companies. Skillnet Ireland is funded from the National Training Fund through the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
